"Hey! Stop it! Come on…please?” cried Sakaiya, running from the sound of rushing water, laughter sounding behind her.
“Oh fine,” sighed Sailee, finally ceasing to stop laughing, “Really, it’s just water though…” she mumbled under her breath, her gaze upturning to the sky, though it was barely visible through the canopy of trees. Her long, black tail flicked at her sides, shooing away pesky flies as she walked beside her friend.
Sakaiya smiled at her friend, the sunlight filtered through the trees, splashing her pelt white and grey with shadows. She gave her friend a nudge on the side, before turning and catering away, towards the grassy meadow, calling out, “You’re it!”
“So that’s how you want to play, hmm?” Sailee mumbled to herself, cantering after Sakaiya, her blackened hooves beating a rhythm in the soft sod. Soon she was beside her friend, laughing out loud as she touched her muzzle to Sakaiya’s white pelt, and then dodged out of her reach, changing to a gallop as she reached the meadow, going to a hill where she could see her herd, and the castle of Kubara. She gave a sigh as she lowered her head to the ground to crop up some grass, laughing as the foals played, seeming oblivious to the royal children of the castle, approaching them, the foals just leapt about, but something suspicious caught Sailee’s eye, a few men stood by, rough ropes in their hands, advancing toward to foals along with the children. She turned to Sakaiya as she stopped beside her friend, “Come, we must save the foals from the royals!”
Sakaiya nodded and joined her friend at a gallop, ears back, teeth bared, giving a scream at the two men, stopping between them and the foals, she reared, legs flailing, trying to frighten them away, Sailee doing the same, but instead the two men smiled and exchanged words in a strange language, then threw the ropes around the horses necks, pulling them down on four feet and pulling them away from the herd.
Once they reached the castle, they were thoroughly worn out from fighting the men most of the way, their heads hung low as they walked, and sighed when the men put them into cramped stalls, though they were glad to be next to each other.
Sakaiya turned her head to gaze at her friend, even though she was barely visible in the dark stable, “We’ll get out of this, one way or another,” she said, hoping to lighten her friends’ spirit and hers as well.
“Yeah, sure…” Sailee replied, a dejected and defeated look on her face, as she dozed off to sleep in the odd silence.
Not much later after they had fallen asleep, they both woke up, alarmed as hot, billowing flames started to engulf the stable. Sailee looked to her friend, the whites in her eyes showing.
“Fire!” She said, mostly to herself, she turned and kicked at her door, and soon Sakaiya did the same. As the flames grew closer the doors finally broke, leaving them to gallop far from the blazing stable. But wait, they were lost, they’d never been in these parts before, looking around anxiously they went toward the sound of rushing water, hoping to follow it back to the forest where they’d find their herd. As they raced toward it, they could see a silvery figure, its pelt glittering like stars, it was the air spirit!
As they drew nearer, they bowed their heads to the figure, unsure if they’d hear the voice, or if it would just fade away.
“Hello, brave equines, you saved the foals, sacrificing yourself, you escaped the flames, you have been proved worthy,” the spirit’s voice seemed airy and light, then the figure seemed to be swept off in a strong wind.
Looking over at her friend, Sailee gasped, her pelt was white as the winter snow that fell, and glistened like the stars, but another thing that caught her eye, was a long, spiraling horn protruding from her forehead, her voice was anxious, she had heard of this creature from the herd elders, “Sakaiya! You’re a unicorn!”
Sakaiya looked at her friend as she spoke, “Yeah, and you’re a Pegasus!” she smiled as she gazed at the silky wings resting by her friends side, laughing as Sailee folded them out quizzically, before giving a small run and rising up into the air.
Sailee’s voice sounded from above as she spoke, “You think this is what the air spirit meant when he said we proved worthy?”
Sakaiya watched her friend as she thought, “Maybe…”
Now, almost a hundred years later, the land of Kubara has been taken over by the wild, where the spirits of Sakiaya and Sailee rest in the sacred river.
